In late January, the Jennifer Perlmutter Gallery will be hosting a special exhibition of pieces entitled, Deconstruction. Local Lafayette resident, Joyce Mallonee, channeled her 25 years of experience with breast cancer into the project. Together with her son, Alex, the pair collaborated with seven artists across media to create eight pieces of work for the exhibition. Each piece tells a part of Joyce’s personal journey and explores themes of denial, vanity, humor, and creativity as essential mechanisms for coping with cancer.
Although Joyce passed away in October, Alex has finished the show on his mother’s behalf. They believe art can empower cancer survivors to tell their stories through creative expression, prompting difficult but crucial conversations with loved ones that help both the survivors and their families deal with the disease.
Deconstruction will be on display by appointment at the Jennifer Perlmutter Gallery (3525 Mt Diablo Blvd, Lafayette, CA 94549). To make an appointment, please visit calendly.com/desconstructionartshow
