Incredible Lafayette schools

Today's love story comes from the Superintendent of the Lafayette School District, Richard Whitmore, regarding our incredible Lafayette schools.

“During the past week, we’ve set sail on a journey into uncharted waters and are getting ready for the possibility of many weeks of distance learning. Our classrooms are usually filled with children, and many of them are third or fourth generations of Lafayette natives, as are many of their teachers, but we have been getting ready for the new normal:

- Our teachers gathered together when school closure became a real possibility to put instructional resources online with just a few days’ notice

- One of the district's biggest efforts this past week has been the distribution of Chromebooks to our families who need them to access the online materials

- Teachers are at work even though our facilities are closed. They are busy contacting parents and students alike and learning new platforms and strategies to stay connected

- Principals are working with District leadership to develop a next round of online curriculum and resources, and protocols to serve all our students by distance learning

- Only a very small number of people are on-site, to respect the shelter-in-place, but everyone across the District is becoming an expert on video-conferencing and we are testing all kinds of new tools

- Our Governing Board has been busy supporting our work, with communications and hands-on work, and will convene next Wednesday in a meeting that will have virtual access for the first time”

We are fortunate to have such dedication and commitment from the administration, teachers and staff of our Lafayette school system!”
