If you are a Lafayette-Moraga Trail walker or biker, you’ve no doubt watched the building progress to the southeast of Las Trampas Creek, on Lafayette’s Lana Lane. This is the site of Las Trampas, Inc., our community-based nonprofit organization committed to serving developmentally disabled adults. First incorporated in 1958, the property was once a school for developmentally disabled children. It became an adult center in the 1970s, and over the past few years, has undergone a stunning remodel, thanks to its REACH Beyond Campaign, whereby loyal supporters and foundations have donated to raise the funds for the renovations. I am proud to say we are one of those supporters.

"It's so thrilling to know that this community values people of ALL abilities and has rallied together to build a state-of-the-art facility to ensure the success of people with developmental disabilities," says Daniel Hogue, executive director of Las Trampas, Inc.

At Las Trampas, under the guidance of trained staff, clients take part in a variety of on-site and community activities designed to help develop and maintain communication, social, intellectual, and physical skills. Programs emphasize a lifelong educational process that includes self-advocacy, evaluating risks and consequences, learning to manage strong emotions, and clear communication. Participants practice these skills in real-life situations, such as outings to the bank, the grocery, restaurants, baseball games, and museums. Campus activities include art instruction, food preparation, kitchen skills, computer skills, physical fitness activities, music, a reading lounge, and an on-site garden.

This month the facility is set to complete the renovation project, and Las Trampas, Inc. is just shy of its total fundraising goal. Please join me in helping this wonderful organization cross its finish line. Click here to donate.
